CH-DVD: China’s New High Definition DVD Standard

Couple days ago, the exactly time is on Sept. 7, The Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center (OMNERC), a laboratory dedicated to optical disc research in Tsinghua University had announced CH-DVD (China High Definition DVD), a new generation high definition DVD format that developed in collaboration with research institutes and manufacturing enterprises at home and abroad. CH-DVD is a high definition DVD standard with additional Chinese-owned technology tacked on.

After I have posted about two rivals of next-generation formats, Blu-ray and HD-DVD, I thought that there would be no more another format in high-definition technology. Guest what? I have made a mistake, as if those two high definition DVD format are not enough for the world. China has put itself in ahead; they are trying to get a portion of this market.

Some rumors said that because that Chinese-owned technology that tacked on in this high definition DVD format, it makes the form of advanced copy protection that designed to prevent the spread of pirated content. This is good news for industries. However, it is a bad news for piracy.
