Spitz Wins Olympic Mountain Bike Race Gold Medal

Germany's Sabine Spitz has just won the gold medal in the Olympic women's mountain bike race. This medal has completed her achievement at the Athens Games four years ago, where she only got bronze medal.

Spitz stopped about five meters (yards) from the finish, hopped off her bike and carried it across the finish line. She finished six laps around the 2.75-mile course in 1 hour, 45 minutes, 11 seconds. Meanwhile, Poland's Maja Wloszezowska won the silver, finishing 41 seconds behind Spitz. Moreover, Russia's Irina Kalentieva won the bronze, another 36 seconds back.

Spitz led by 21 seconds after the first lap, then she led by 49 seconds after two, and was never seriously threatened on the 88-degree day. Unfortunately, defending gold medalist Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa of Norway only raced in three laps before dropping out, citing mechanical problems.
